No matter how devoted a gym-junkie you might be, changing up your routine every once in a while is a tried-and-tested recipe, that will keep you hyped about working out perpetually.  Now that the warm months have finally arrived, you can make the most of this summer by moving your routine into the great outdoors – plus, it’s great for getting plenty of that precious vitamin D, and those gains look far better on a tanned bod!

However, before you rush outside for your new boot-camp exercise program or a hiking session, make sure you bring the following five basics that will make your workouts more effective, comfortable, and successful!

1. Pick the right gear

Depending on the type of a workout you’d choose, look into the most suitable wearables for that purpose.  After all, CrossFit, triathlons and similar hardcore workouts require more durable equipment, preferably compressive for added support, and not to mention that they should help keep your skin dry and prevent chafing.

On the other hand, if you’re up for some cycling, jogging, hiking, or mountain-climbing, each and every one of those activities mean that you’ll need a certain type of glove, and perhaps some added protection.  Durability and comfort should always come first, no matter what type of outdoor exercise you’ll enjoy!

2. Don’t forget the tech

Lone wolves among you will appreciate having their phone safely attached to their hand, and a pair of headphones that will provide you with the perfect amount of motivation.  However, keep in mind that getting all tangled up in wires is out of the question, so look for wireless earbuds that will stay safely in place for the duration of your training.

Another great gadget to help you with your outdoor efforts is a fitness tracker, to make sure that your vitals are in healthy ranges, and to remind you of how far you’ve come with your workout – isn’t that the best kind of motivation in the sizzling sun?

3. Stay hydrated

While we’re on the topic of unbearable heat, every athlete knows that no outdoor training can be safe without proper hydration.  Even if you schedule your workout in the wee hours of the morning when the sun isn’t even up, your body will still have to handle the arduous heat and the challenging routine you’ve prepared.

That is why you need to find the best water bottle to keep by your side every time you plan to train outside; and as for your longer stretches of outdoor activity, think big!  You’ll need to replenish your H2O very often, and not to mention that you should also consider some added electrolytes to keep those glycogen stores happy.

4. Outdoor-friendly shoes

In addition to the garments such as tights, shorts, and tank tops, you also need to consider the right pair of sneakers for your outdoor endeavors.  Think in terms of durability, but also added stability for top performance, as well as breathable materials and comfortable soles.  You don’t want to find yourself worrying about callouses or a twisted ankle in the middle of your morning workout in nature.

This is especially important for athletes who like to combine several disciplines into a single session, hence the need for cross-training sneakers that will endure all challenges you come across, be it rugged terrain, water, or high temperatures.

5. Stay sun-safe

On a slightly different note, but equally important for your wellbeing and safety, you also need to factor in the time you’ll spend in the sun. Proper hydration is not enough to keep you protected, so finding the best sunscreen for those exposed areas of your skin is crucial.

Add to that a pair of shades and perhaps a cap for extra protection, or even clothes made of materials that protect from the sun’s harmful rays, and you’ll be all set for the duration of your outdoor workout adventures.
