Bodybuilding is a serious profession.  It may seem easy growing those muscles and lifting tons of heavy weights day after day in the gym, however, it requires hard work to become a professional bodybuilder.

Certainly, this career is not for everyone.  In this article, learn about the pros and cons of being a professional bodybuilder and some important tips when you choose to become one.

Advantages of Being a Pro Bodybuilder

You have a reason (and motivation) to eat healthy.

Bodybuilders know that proper nutrition has a big role to play in their career. Supplying their body with the right foods – lean protein, fish, healthy fats (nuts, avocado, olive oil), complex carbohydrates, lots of vegetables, and some fruits is essential.  In order for muscles to grow, a balanced diet is essential. You can work out the whole day, but if you don’t load your body with the right food, all your hard work will not pay off.

Bodybuilding is good for your health.

Widely regarded as a healthy activity, bodybuilding makes a person lean and muscular which is really a good thing.  Bodybuilding involves a great deal of strength training, which has proven health benefits to your body.

You learn self-discipline.

It takes hard work to become a successful bodybuilder. The workout routines are never simple (it only gets harder each day) and you really have to commit to a healthy lifestyle.  That means quitting smoking, alcohol and unhealthy eating.  Bodybuilding teaches you to be consistent and disciplined to achieve your goals in the end.

There’s a good potential earning.

Pro bodybuilders generally earn through competitions but they also make a decent income from sponsorships, modeling, training, and running their own gym. In competitions, bodybuilders are judged based on their overall muscle development, proportion and symmetry, mass and definition. According to payscale.com, bodybuilders earn an average of $52K per year.

Disadvantages of Being a Bodybuilder

Like any other profession, becoming a bodybuilder does have some downsides too.

You have to work harder than you think.

Many people who chose this path had to quit their job and really focus on exercise, diet, and training.  Growing lean and strong muscles take time.  You could be spending four to eight hours in the gym every single day to get the results you want.

Bodybuilding is tied to certain health issues too.

Generally, bodybuilding is a good physical activity that benefits your health, but, just like any other workout, too much can do more harm than good. Professional bodybuilders are likely to develop kidney problems due to chronic high-protein intake and it can be revealed during sonography by using a clear ultrasound gel. What happens is that the glomeruli – the filtering units of the kidneys, develop scarring because of too much strain trying to filter excess protein.  This occurrence is called “hyper-filtration”.  Another danger to a kidney could be E.coli infection.  Thus, visiting your doctor from time to time is essential to protect your body against the danger of too much protein intake.

Training is endless.

Building lean and bulgy muscles doesn’t happen over night; not even a week or a few months.  It takes time and effort to achieve your desired body, and more effort and constant training to maintain it.  On average, people who spend three hours per week in the gym lifting weights can expect to gain four to 15 pounds of weight in one year.  After a few more years, the rate of gaining muscle slows. Thus, there’s a need to amp up one’s exercise routine.

There’s a narrow path to achieving a pro status.

If you really want to become a professional bodybuilder and make a nice career out of it, you have to approach this sport with a professional attitude. Many people hop into this profession out of pure curiosity or excitement but once they realize how difficult it can be, they quit.  Just like any sport, you are dedicating most of your time and energy to it.  Thus, you really have to be sure that it is what you really want.

Becoming a pro bodybuilder can be a rewarding career for those who are serious about it but it is definitely not for everyone. If you’re thinking about becoming one, take time to weigh these pros and cons so you can really decide if it’s the right path for you.
