How fast can you build lean muscle?

There are a lot of myths and false information floating around about the amount of lean muscle you can expect to gain per week or per month.  These myths are perpetuated by muscle building magazines and the internet.  No wonder so many persons have such unrealistic expectations when they first attempt to build muscle.  

The realistic amount of lean muscle that you can build per week is 0.75 lbs which is equivalent to 3 lbs of muscle per month.  This might not seem much but can you imagine the cumulative effect in six months or a year’s time?  This is why it is important to be patient when building muscle.  Many persons get frustrated when they do not see immediate results and they give up.

In the early stages of your muscle building programme you can expect to see huge gains.   However, as time progresses you will see the gains incrementally decrease.  Therefore, beginners have a greater chance of seeing dramatic changes.

This post is not meant to foster pessimism but give you a realistic expectation concerning what you can achieve in the gym.  If someone claims to have gained 10 pounds of muscle in one week it is more than likely that just 2 of those pounds are lean muscle.  The rest are probably due to water weight, glycogen storage and increase in body fat percentage.  Don’t be fooled.  There are no shortcuts to building lean muscle.  It takes time.
