Meal replacements are basically meals in a liquid format.  They are specially designed to contain all the macronutrients of a normal meal in addition to important vitamins and minerals that the body needs.  Meal replacements though unecessary, is a helpful way to meet your calorie needs since it might be a difficult task to accomplish through your regular meals.

For hardgainers attempting to build muscle, it is all about upping calorie intake and it can be difficult to achieve the requisite calories to build more muscle mass.  This is where meal replacements come in handy by offering an easily consumable meal that can be had in a matter of a few minutes.  The time spent preparing that meal and having it would be taken out of the equation for those who simply do not have the time.  For that reason, a meal replacement is invaluable in the arsenal of the hardgainer who lives a busy, fast paced lifestyle, or who simply cannot acquire the necessary calories from their regular meals that they need to force their body into an anabolic state.

There are many different types of meal replacements available depending on your nutritional goals.  Of course, for the hargainer wanting to build muscle mass, a meal replacement that is high in protein would be ideal.  Protein is very important for growth and repair of muscle tissue, and meal replacements are a great way to meet one’s daily protein requirements.

If you want to get the most out of meal replacements then you need to use them wisely.  They are not meant to replace your regular meals but are to be taken in addition to them.  Nothing beats solid food so if you think you can drink meal replacements all day and build muscle you are grossly mistaken.  Meal replacements are merely second best to regular meals so use them as a way to supplement your diet and not to live off of.

If you do not want to buy meal replacement formulas you can very well make them on your own.  The advantage would be that you would be able to determine the exact ingredients and ratio of carbs, protein and fats you desire.
