Although eating a snack after you work out is important, did you know it’s also important to eat something before you work out?  The right foods will fuel your body and ensure that you have enough energy to get through your routine.  Before you run to grab a cookie to snack on, you might want to learn which foods are best to eat before working out.  The right foods can actually make all the difference to how you feel while exercising, so try them out and see what a difference they make for you!

1. Meat Wrap

A wrap is going to supply you with protein so that you have a lot of energy throughout your workout.  Start out with a leaf of lettuce and cover it with something like mustard.  After this, put several slices of turkey meat on it along with your choice of vegetables.  Eat this to enjoy building muscle or burn calories with cardio.  This is a snack that is low in calories, sugar and carbohydrates.

2. Fruit and Cheese

Some low-fat cottage cheese paired with berries or a banana makes for a great pre-workout snack. The cheese is high in protein, the fruit has minimal sugar, and it will help you feel full so you don’t want to eat while you are exercising.  The vitamins and minerals will also give you a boost while working out so you have more endurance.

3. Steel-Cut Oats

Steel-cut oats are much better for you than processed quick-oats, even though they do take more time to prepare.  Cook these with some of your favorite protein powder and eat one hour before you work out.  This is high in calories and carbohydrates, so it’s going to give you a lot of energy to burn while working out.  If you are going to do an endurance exercise, then this is the perfect snack.  You can also make this ahead of time and heat it up the next day if you’re short on time.

4. Greek Yogurt and Berries

Greek yogurt is a great choice for a snack because it’s high in protein and low in calories.  It’s even better when paired with some fresh berries, so try it out!  Of course, regular non-fat yogurt is the best, as this has less sugar in it than the flavored kinds.  Add your own berries to reduce sugars and eat around 30 minutes before you do your workout.  If you don’t have time to eat a yogurt, freeze your berries and throw them in a blender with the yogurt.  This will make a great shake that you can sip on while you’re on the go.

5. Celery and Almond Butter

Almond butter is a great alternative to peanut butter, especially when it’s all-natural and made without added salts and sugars.  Spread this on celery sticks and eat an hour before you exercise. You can also spread the almond butter on a piece of whole grain bread if you plan on working out for a long time.  This snack is high in protein so it will keep you energized, it is also high in healthy fats which are good for your body.
