WHAT IS THE PALEO DIET?
The Paleo Diet advocates for us to get back to eating like our cavemen ancestors did in the Paleolithic era which is pre agrarian times. This is in contrast to the Neolithic era when man became less nomadic and settled down around farming communities which eventually developed into cities and towns.
PALEOLITHIC MAN WAS HEALTHIER
Evidence suggest that Paleolithic man was stronger, healthier, taller and less disease prone than their counterparts following them. The problem is said to be attributed by the introduction of grains, legumes and dairy products into our diet when farming was discovered in the Neolithic period. These are foods that are prohibited in the Paleo diet.
Grains are a very new food source and adherents of the Paleo diet believe grains were not meant to be a constant part of the human diet and it’s introductions has resulted in a wide variety of diseases and ailments that were not present pre the advent of farming.
From what I have said so far the Paleo diet seems very restrictive. You will have to do a major overhaul in terms of your dietary intake if you are to follow this so if you decide to adopt it on a permanent basis it’s best to do it gradually. However, you can still follow this diet for a limited period to get lean for that beach trip or a major event when you need to be at your physical best. Nothing works better than this diet in getting you lean. It doesn’t matter if you want to lose fat or build muscle, it will work just the same.
BENEFITS OF THE PALEO DIET
Protein is the major component of this diet to be obtained from lean meats and seafoods. If you didn’t know, protein was the major food source for our ancestors in the Paleolithic era. Our Paleolithic ancestors obtained their carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables. The major benefit of this diet is the stability of your glucose level since you will be staying away from processed foods which will make you feel healthier and reduce cravings (2 Secrets To Curing Your Sweet Tooth).
Another benefit of this diet is that it is net alkaline which prevents the breaking down of muscle tissue. The Western diet tends to be acidic and as a result muscle tissue is easily broken down. With the Paleo diet you do not have to worry about losing muscle tissue as following this diet will preserve your muscle tissue.
The Paleo diet is used by many athletes on a temporary basis to get in shape ahead of major competitions. If you try it for a few weeks I think you will appreciate the improvements you will see in your physique.
