On hot days we need to be careful not to overexert ourselves especially when the relative humidity is high. The higher the relative humidity the harder it will be for our bodies to cool down so this is an important factor to take into account in addition to the environmental temperature.
It is best to exercise in a cool environment and if you have to workout in a hot atmosphere then make sure you wear comfortable clothing and drink a lot of water. Your choice of clothing is very important because some fabrics do not allow your skin to
breathe which can dangerously increase your body’s temperature. On hot days when you sweat a lot you have to make sure you drink a lot of water to replace the fluids lost. Do not wait until you are thirsty as this is a sign that the damage might have already taken place.
It is best to exercise in the early morning and late afternoon as at these times heat levels are reduced. If you have to choose to exercise during the day then choose a cool location. Although it’s a good idea to take note of the air temperature forecasted for the day a special attention should also be paid to the heat index which is the real indicator of heat. The heat index takes into account the rate at which sweat evaporates from the skin in addition to the environmental temperature. The higher the humidity the less evaporation takes place which prevents your body from cooling down. This is why you need to pay attention to the humidity in addition to air temperature.
Water is the best thing to drink for heat exhaustion. If someone has fainted try to keep them as cool as possbile and seek medical help quicky. You could save their life.
